Yes you read that headline right… we are steaming these first before baking them! No I haven’t gone crazy, pinky promise!
When you steam them before you bake them something magical happens, they stay super soft and mashed potato like on the inside and then when you finish them off by baking them, they get a light crispy to the outside… it’s kinda perfect!
Steps to making these Healthy Oil Free Fry’s:
- wash and slice your potatoes into fry’s.
- You need a steamer basket for you pot, you can find them almost anywhere from target to amazon just search for a steamer basket. You also need to make sure you have enough water under the basket and you steam at a low enough temperature… yes LOW enough why you ask? Because if you try and speed it up and steam on high heat… the water evaporates and you char/burn the pot… no joke I have done this… low/medium heat and keep an eye on it!
- Once they are 90% cooked by steaming you line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the potatoes on the baking sheet… mix up the seasoning in a small bowl and sprinkle over the top of the sry’s and use your hands to toss them around and coat them as best you can… you can also add any of flavor seasoning you like!
- Bake them off for about 20 minutes flipping them half way through, they will get slightly crispy on the outside.
That’s it, life changing I promise you won’t just plain ol’ bake them again after making them this wayI know you are going to love them!

Ingredients
2-3 medium brown russet potatoes
SEASONING:
1 TBSP flour (all purpose or GF variety)
Pinch of pepper
Pinch of sea salt
½ tsp each: onion, garlic, chili seasoning
Instructions
Pre-heat the oven to 430˚ F
- Wash and slice the potatoes into fry’s
- Using a steamer basket and stove top pot, place the sliced potatoes fry’s into the steamer basket and steam on low/medium heat with the lid on until potatoes are 90% done. (about 20-30 minutes)
- While they are steaming mix up the seasoning in a small bowl.
- Then line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the fry’s on the baking sheet, sprinkle to seasoning over the fry’s and toss them around in it.
- Bake until slightly crispy. (about 20 minutes flipping them over half way through)
Notes
Notes: if temp is too high you will boil the water right out of the pan and it will burn your pot so be sure to steam at low temps and have an inch or so of water in the bottom of the pot.
