Ingredients
Take a look at the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and quantities to make this Vegan Hot Chocolate.
- Chocolate Bar: I used "Endangered Species" 88% chocolate bar, but use any vegan chocolate bar that is your favorite.
- Cashew Milk: I used my homemade cashew milk but store bought will work as well, it just won't be as creamy.
Variations
- White Chocolate: Swap the vegan dark chocolate bar for a white chocolate variety.
- Milk: Use a different nut milk such as my Homemade Coconut Milk or my Homemade Almond Milk.
How to make Vegan Hot Chocolate
First you need to make the homemade cashew milk, you could use store bought but it’s not as creamy and you don’t get to control the amount of sweetness.
Then you simply just add the chocolate bar, cashew milk (that you sweetened with your choice of sweetener) and whisk it all together on low-med heat (whisking continually to avoid the chocolate from burning) until the chocolate is melted and you have a creamy slightly froth homemade hot chocolate!
Expert Tips
- Stir Constantly: To avoid the chocolate from burning be sure you are continually whisking the mixture.
- Quality Chocolate: Make sure you are using a good high quality vegan chocolate without a bunch of fillers, I like Endangered Species brand, vegan friendly options.
Recipe FAQs
Hot chocolate is usually made with a chocolate bar and hot cocoa is made with powder (cocoa).
Yes, chocolate naturally contains caffeine but not even close to the amount in coffee, of course it depends on the type of chocolate you use (milk chocolate has less than dark chocolate) but in general we’re talking not even ¼ of what is in coffee.
I use the 88% dark chocolate bar from the Endangered Species brand. I like it because of the simple clean ingredients but you can use any kind of chocolate bar that melts well.
