Ingredients
Here's a look at the simple ingredients that go into this vegan smoothie. The full list and quantities of each are in the recipe card further down the page.
- Banana: Provides the sweetness for the smoothie.
- Cocoa/Cacao Powder: Gives the chocolaty flavor to the smoothie. I prefer cocoa powder, but you can use cacao if you want a less refined version.
- Hemp Seeds: Provide protein as well as both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. You can substitute the hemp seeds for chia seeds or flax seeds if you prefer.
- Nut Butter: Adds healthy fat to the smoothie and some additional protein. My favorites are peanut butter and almond butter, but cashew butter works well too.
- Plant-Based Milk: Gives the smoothie a creamy texture. Use any non-dairy milk you like, such as cashew, coconut, or oat.
Variations
- Nut-Free: Use sunflower butter in place of the nut butter and be sure to use a nut-free milk.
- Caffeine-Free: Swap the cocoa or cacao for carob powder.
- More Protein: Add a scoop of your favorite plant-based protein powder for a chocolate protein smoothie.
- More Sweetness: If you like your smoothies on the sweeter side, add a bit of maple syrup to sweeten it up.
- Toppings: Top off your smoothie with some cacao nibs, vegan chocolate chips, sliced banana, or a drizzle of nut butter.
How to Make This Chocolate Smoothie Recipe
Step 1: Add the frozen banana to your blender followed by the cocoa or cacao powder, hemp seeds, and nut butter.
Step 2: Pour in the non-dairy milk you are using.
Step 3: Blend together until smooth.
How to Store
Smoothies do not keep well and are best enjoyed right away. Even when chilled in the refrigerator, their texture will begin to deteriorate, so I don’t recommend storing them.
Expert Tips
- Use a frozen banana: Be sure to use a previously frozen banana as this helps to make the smoothie cold. You also want to use a ripe banana. Remember…the riper the banana, the sweeter it is!
- Add ice if needed: If the smoothie isn’t cold enough for your liking, you can add 2-3 ice cubes and blend again.
- Try using homemade milk: This smoothie is great with one of our homemade non-dairy milk recipes such as our cashew milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or almond milk.
Recipe FAQs
Ingredients will vary depending on the recipe, but this plant-based version is made with non-dairy milk, frozen banana, nut butter, hemp seeds, and cocoa powder.
Adding too much sugar is often the culprit for a smoothie being unhealthy. Using fruit as a sweetener like in this recipe often reduces the need to add more sugar.
Using milk instead of water gives smoothies a creamy texture. Adding oats can also make a smoothie thicker and creamier.
