Ingredients
Here's a look at the simple ingredients to make these Vegan Black Bean Burgers recipe. Check the recipe card for the complete list and quantities of each one.
- Black Beans: I used canned no salt added organic. Make sure to strain, wash and drain them.
- Oats: Make sure to use old fashioned rolled oats not quick oats, they will be too sticky.
- Onion and Garlic: The flavors added to these vegan black bean burgers.
- Red Lentils: I used red lentils but you can also use quinoa here, both work great, lentils create a smoother burger and quinoa gives more texture.
Variations
- Salad or Side: If your not feeling like a burger with a bun as your meal you can break apart these Vegan Black Bean Burgers and add it directly into your salad as an added protein to your salad to make it more filling or you can even eat this burger by itself with any side like my roasted Curry Cauliflower, Zucchini Noodles, Kale Pasta, Spinach Pesto Pasta, Chickpea Tuna Salad, Pear Salad or even Quinoa Spinach salad.
- Toppings: This easy black bean burger can be topped with basically any toppings you like (check ingredients listed if you want it vegan) here’s a few, sliced or shredded vegan cheese, pickles, any type of lettuce, tomato’s, mushrooms, avacatos slices or mashed up, peppers, vegan ketchup, vegan mayonnaise basically any favorite will work great.
- Buns: You can use any type of bread you’d like, to ensure it's vegan be sure to check the ingredients and labels. Hamburger buns, slices of any favorites of bread (cut into triangles), pretzels buns, french baguettes or brioche buns (some need to be home made if you want them to be vegan) you can even put the burger in a vegan pita bread.
- Optional Quinoa: Yes, for these black bean vegan burgers you can use quinoa in place of the red lentils, rinse quinoa and cook according to package directions, you’ll want ¾ cup to add in place of the red lentils, it will change the taste and texture of the burger but will still taste great I have enjoyed them both ways.
How to make Vegan Black Bean Burgers
Prep Step 1: Make red lentils (or quinoa) and let cool. Cook according to the package directions as I find they all vary slightly. While it's cooking I like to prep the rest of the ingredients.
Step 2: Put oats in food processor and pulse until textured flour is formed, set aside.
Step 3: Roughly chop the onion and mince the garlic, set aside.
Step 4: Drain, rinse and strain the black beans. Add them to a large bowl and mash them very well with a fork,
Step 5: Add red lentils to bowl. (The lentils should be a mushy consistency that's why we used red lentils).
Step 6: Fold in the onion and garlic.
Step 7: Add in the oat flour, salt and pepper to taste and mix well, it should form a nice dough. Form 4 patty's with the dough.
The dough.
Formed patty's.
Step 8: Using a non-stick pan or sprayed pan, heat it to medium heat and place the burgers in the skillet. Let cook until golden brown and crispy (about 4-5 minutes per side). Makes 4 large burgers. Enjoy right away or store in the fridge for 2 days re-heating on the skillet or in the microwave.
Expert Tips
- Customization: This is a quick and easy burger you can customize to your liking, eat it as a burger or break it into a salad, add or subtract toppings, choose a burger bun or pita bread, have the burger alone or with any side, have for dinner or lunch regardless of how you eat this vegan burger it tastes amazing.
- Storing: Honestly they are best fresh, after being in the fridge they tend to get a little dry, but if you do store and reheat them as long as you have enough toppings they are still delicious. Store for up to two days in the fridge.

Rosie
These were SUPER easy, and really good! I made them "meatloaf style" shaping them into little loafy patties and topping with a ketchup glaze after frying minus the bun and toppings. They have a very "vintage vegan" taste, earthy and real without alot of crap added to make them taste "meaty". Thanks so much for such an easy, delicious recipe that can be made with everyday ingredients that are usually on hand!
